Closed for winter
No. Sach Pass shut for the winter in mid-October and usually reopens in June or early July, once the snow is cleared. Bairagarh and Chamba stay open all year.

The road, month by month

Walls of snow at the top, slush and meltwater. The worst surface of the year, once it's officially open.

Snow going. The first half of the month is often good.

Monsoon. Landslides, falling rock, closures at short notice.

The best window. Dry road, clear skies, low streams. Cold nights.
- Mid-Oct–May
Closed to vehicles. Pangi can't be reached this way.

Streams are lowest at dawn. Aim to be over the top by late morning.

Conditions change overnight. Check in Bairagarh before you commit to the climb. If you're told to turn back, turn back.
When it's shut: other ways into Pangi
Pangi can also be reached by the Manali–Udaipur road through Lahaul, or from Kishtwar in Jammu and Kashmir on a narrow cliffside road. Both are for experienced drivers only.

When does Sach Pass open?
Usually in June or early July, once the Public Works Department has cut through the snow. In 2026 light vehicles were allowed through in late April.
When does Sach Pass close?
Around 15 October, by order of the Chamba district administration, or earlier if heavy snow comes early.
What's the best month to cross?
September to early October, when the road is driest and the streams are lowest. Early July can be good too, before the monsoon.
Is there a bus over Sach Pass?
Yes, in season. HRTC runs a direct Chamba to Killar bus. In 2026 it left Chamba at 5 am and cost ₹432. Check times with HRTC before you plan around it.
