Is Sach Pass dangerous? What actually goes wrong on the road

By Chhobyang Singhe and Basudev Boudh · · 6 min read

Yes, it can be. Height isn't the danger. Sach Pass is a narrow, unpaved road with long drops, falling rock, early-season avalanches and ice in autumn, and help is hours away. Most crossings are uneventful, but the serious incidents cluster around fresh snow, the monsoon and driving after dark.

What has actually gone wrong on Sach Pass?

These are the reported incidents we could source, newest first:

  • 15 October 2026. About a foot of snow fell at the top and shut the pass for two days. The PWD reopened it for small 4×4 vehicles only, and officials warned that frozen water and icy patches made the route treacherous.
  • 29 May 2026. A car carrying seven tourists from Chhattisgarh went into a steep gorge on the Bairagarh–Sach Pass–Killar road around midnight. All eight people in it, including the driver, died. The group had left a Dalhousie hotel for Sach Pass that day and hadn’t come back by evening. The hotel raised the alarm. Chamba’s Superintendent of Police called the site “a highly inaccessible area”.
  • 3 June 2025. An avalanche struck the pass a week after it reopened for the season. The alert came in at about 8:30 pm, and 33 tourists and locals were rescued. The road stayed shut until the PWD issued a fitness certificate.
  • 26 June 2022. Boulders fell on an HRTC bus running from Killar towards Tissa near the pass. One passenger was killed and six were hurt.

None of these were caused by the height of the pass. They were caused by snow, falling rock, a drop off the edge, and darkness.

Which part of the road is the dangerous part?

The 30 km above Bairagarh, and the descent to Killar. One rider’s log describes the tarmac ending “right after the village” and the way down the Pangi side as “way more difficult than coming up”, with loose rock, mud and a rear wheel that kept sliding. The stretch over the top is covered stop by stop in our Chamba to Killar guide, including the streams that rise through the afternoon.

Below Bairagarh, the road to Chamba is mostly paved, though it is narrow in places. The bus accident in 2022 is a reminder that rockfall can happen anywhere on this road.

When is Sach Pass most dangerous?

  • Right after it opens (May–June). Snow walls still line the road, meltwater softens it, and avalanches are possible: the 2025 one came a week after reopening. When the pass opened in May 2026, the authorities warned of snow walls, falling rocks and slippery roads from melting snow.
  • The monsoon (mid-July to August). Landslides and washed-out sections. HRTC stopped its Chamba–Killar bus in August 2025 because rain had damaged the road, and it didn’t run again for 11 months.
  • After the first snow (from mid-October). When the district closed the pass for winter in 2024, the order cited ice on the road in the early morning and late evening, and the risk of being stranded by sudden snow.
  • After dark, at any time of year. The 2026 accident happened around midnight, and the 2025 avalanche alert came in at night. Plan the day so you’re off the high road well before sunset.

If something goes wrong, how far away is help?

Further than most people expect. Phone signal is patchy to none above Bairagarh. The nearest hospitals are the civil hospitals at Tissa (on the Chamba side) and Killar (on the Pangi side). The Tribune reported in July 2024 that Killar’s 50-bed hospital had only five of its 12 sanctioned medical officers, and was 177 km from the medical college in Chamba.

Rescues are run by the Chamba district administration with the police and Home Guards. On the climb, the police post at Satrundi notes vehicles going through, so there’s a record that you passed. That helps if someone reports you missing. But it doesn’t mean anyone is watching the road.

How do you lower the risk?

  • Check the latest official status on is Sach Pass open?, then ask again in Bairagarh in the morning. If you’re told to turn back, turn back.
  • Sleep at the foot of the climb in Bairagarh and start at first light, so you’re over the top by late morning.
  • Don’t try it as a same-day return from Dalhousie or Chamba. It’s a long day with no margin. See can you do Sach Pass as a day trip?
  • Take the right vehicle, and drive it slowly. On two wheels, read riding Sach Pass on a motorcycle.
  • Know the altitude signs. The top is at about 4,414 m. See altitude sickness on Sach Pass.
  • Tell someone your plan and when you expect to reach Killar or come back down.

Quick answers

Has anyone died on Sach Pass?

Yes. In the most recent case we could find, eight people died when a taxi went into a gorge on the Bairagarh–Sach Pass–Killar road around midnight on 29 May 2026. In June 2022 boulders hit an HRTC bus near the pass, killing one passenger and injuring six.

What is the most dangerous month on Sach Pass?

There's no single month. Early in the season (May and June) brings avalanches and snowmelt. July and August bring the monsoon, which shut the HRTC bus in August 2025. After mid-October the risk is ice, especially early morning and late evening.

Is it safer to hire a local driver?

Usually, yes. A driver who crosses every week knows where the road breaks up, how the streams behave and when to turn back. If you drive yourself, start from Bairagarh at first light and don't plan to drive after dark.

Who rescues people stranded on Sach Pass?

The Chamba district administration. In June 2025 it rescued 33 tourists and locals after an avalanche, with police, Home Guards, other departments and local people.
