Sach Pass in winter: how far can you go, and how does Pangi cope?

By Chhobyang Singhe and Basudev Boudh · · 5 min read

You can't cross Sach Pass in winter. It is closed to vehicles from about mid-October until late May or June. You can still drive up from Chamba towards Bairagarh, weather permitting. Pangi, on the far side, is reached the long way round through Lahaul or Jammu and Kashmir, a trip of 600 km or more.

Why can’t you drive over Sach Pass in winter?

Snow, then ice. The pass is at about 4,414 m. Once snow settles there, the district administration closes the road to vehicles by order. When it did so in 2024, it gave three reasons: freezing temperatures at the pass, an increasingly icy road in the early morning and late evening (reported by the SDM Pangi), and the risk of travellers being stranded by sudden snow. The pass then stays shut for six to seven months. Our post on who opens and closes it has the dates for each year.

How far up the Chamba side can you go?

As far as the snow allows. The road from Chamba through Tissa to Bairagarh is the Churah valley road. Villages along it are lived in all year, and it isn’t covered by the pass closure. Bairagarh, at about 2,800 m and 30 km below the top, is usually as far as it makes sense to drive in winter. Above it, the road to Satrundi and the top is the section that gets closed.

Hotel Diwan Sachpass in Bairagarh stays open all winter. If you want to see the valley under snow, that’s the place to aim for. Check the road from Chamba before you set off, and carry chains or plan to wait if it has snowed overnight.

How is Pangi reached when the pass is shut?

The long way round. With Sach Pass closed, Pangi’s road links are:

  • Through Lahaul: the Sansari–Killar–Thirot–Tandi road down the Chenab valley to Tandi, then over to Manali.
  • Through Jammu and Kashmir: the same road west from Killar to Sansari, then the 112 km Kishtwar–Sansari road that the Border Roads Organisation keeps open. In January 2026 the BRO cleared 4–5 feet of snow from it.

The Tribune reported in October 2026 that these detours stretch a Pangi–Chamba trip to roughly 600 km, against about 170 km over the pass. Even these routes close: The Tribune reported in 2024 that the Sansari–Killar–Thirot–Tandi link “gets snapped when it snows in the valley”.

What happened to the winter helicopter?

It stopped. Pangi has four helipads, at Killar, Ajog, Sach and Dharwas, which are cleared after each snowfall. Winter flights, from Chamba or Bhuntar in Kullu, used to carry residents in and out. In February 2024 The Tribune quoted the chairman of the Pangwal Ekta Manch: the flights “were discontinued in 2020-21”. A tender for a wet-lease helicopter was floated and then shelved.

The central government’s helicopter subsidy scheme for the hill states does list a Chamba–Killar–Chamba route. We found no evidence of a regular winter service running on it.

So can a traveller visit Pangi in winter?

Only by the long roads, and only if you’re ready to be stuck for days. Killar is at about 2,590 m. When it snows there, the valley’s own roads close too. For most people, winter is the time to see the Chamba side from Bairagarh and to come back for the pass when it reopens. That’s usually late May or June: see is Sach Pass open?

Quick answers

Can you walk over Sach Pass in winter?

We don't recommend it and won't help plan it. Once the pass is shut, the district's reasons are ice on the road and the risk of sudden snow stranding people. There's no rescue cover up there in winter beyond what the district can mount.

Is there a helicopter to Pangi in winter?

Not a regular one, as far as we can find. The Tribune reported in February 2024 that winter flights to the valley stopped in 2020–21. Helipads exist at Killar, Ajog, Sach and Dharwas, but a planned wet-lease helicopter was shelved.

Does it snow in Bairagarh?

Yes. Bairagarh is at about 2,800 m and gets winter snow. Hotel Diwan Sachpass stays open all year, but check the road up from Chamba before you drive in snow.

How do people from Pangi get to Chamba in winter?

By road through Lahaul and Manali, or through Kishtwar in Jammu and Kashmir: around 600–700 km instead of about 170 km over the pass. Taxis cost around ₹2,000 per person one way, The Tribune reported in 2026.
