The Public Works Department clears the snow and certifies the road. The Chamba district administration then opens it, or closes it for the winter, by order under the Motor Vehicles Act. The dates move a lot: in the last four seasons it opened between 11 May and 3 July.

Who decides when Sach Pass opens?
Two offices share the job:
- The Public Works Department (PWD) clears the snow, with crews and machines working from both sides. In 2026 the Pangi and Churah divisions cleared it, and the last stretch was done late on a Sunday. Before traffic is allowed, the PWD has to judge the road fit. After the June 2025 avalanche, the district said the road would reopen “only after a complete inspection and once the PWD issues a road fitness certificate”.
- The Chamba district administration then opens or closes the road to traffic by order. When it closed the pass for the winter in 2024, the Deputy Commissioner acted under Section 115 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, which lets a district restrict vehicles on a road for public safety. The 2025 reopening was by a district notification issued on the advice of the SDM Pangi and the PWD sub-division at Killar.
So “is it open?” has a formal answer (is there an order?) and a practical one (can a vehicle like yours get through today?). For the latest of both, see is Sach Pass open?
When has Sach Pass opened and closed in recent years?
Every date here is from a news report of the order or the clearance, listed under Sources.
| Season | Opened | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 3 July | A late year, as The Tribune noted the following June. |
| 2024 | 8 June, light vehicles | Closed for winter by DC order on 30 November 2024. |
| 2025 | About 26 May, light vehicles | An avalanche on 3 June closed it again. Snow stopped traffic on 6–7 October. |
| 2026 | 11 May, light vehicles | PWD certified it for heavy vehicles in late June. HRTC bus from 1 July. Snow shut it on 15–17 October, then small 4×4s only. |
Two things stand out. The opening date moved by almost two months over four years. And the closing date isn’t one day: snow stops traffic first, and the formal winter order can come weeks later.
Why do light vehicles get through before buses?
Because a road a jeep can manage isn’t one a bus can. In 2026 there were seven weeks between light vehicles being allowed (11 May) and the PWD certifying the road for heavy vehicles (late June). The HRTC bus started a few days after that, on 1 July. If you’re relying on the bus, or travelling in a tempo traveller or anything long, the date that matters is the heavy-vehicle certificate, not the first opening.
How do you check before you travel?
- Read the latest status first. Our status page gives the most recent official report, with its date and a link to it. A date a week old can already be out of date.
- Look for the order, not a rumour. The district’s orders are reported by The Tribune’s Chamba correspondent within a day or two. Social media posts saying “open” often mean someone got through on a bike, not that the road is open.
- Ask on the morning you climb. Conditions change overnight. Ask at your stay in Bairagarh before you set off.
- If you’re coming from the Pangi side, the order covers the same road, but ask in Killar before you set off.
The road over the top, and how long the climb takes, are in the Chamba to Killar guide.
Quick answers
Is there an official date when Sach Pass closes?
The Tribune has reported in 2026 that the pass is officially closed to vehicles on 15 October each year. In practice the formal winter order follows the weather: in 2024 the Deputy Commissioner closed it on 30 November.
Can the pass close in the middle of the season?
Yes. In June 2025 an avalanche shut it a week after reopening, and it stayed closed until the PWD certified the road again. In October 2026 snow shut it for two days.
Do heavy vehicles and buses get through at the same time as cars?
Not always. In 2026 light vehicles were allowed from 11 May, and the PWD certified the road for heavy vehicles in late June. The HRTC bus restarted on 1 July.
Where is the official order published?
The orders come from the Deputy Commissioner of Chamba. We couldn't find a single public page that lists them, so the reliable record is the regional press, mainly The Tribune's Chamba correspondent, which reports each order.
