Can you do Sach Pass as a day trip from Dalhousie or Chamba?

By Chhobyang Singhe and Basudev Boudh · · 5 min read

It's possible, but we advise against it. A same-day return from Dalhousie is roughly 330 km, and from Chamba about 240 km. The rough 30 km to the top and back comes in the middle of the day, when the streams are high, and you drive the last hours down in the dark. Sleep a night in Bairagarh instead and go up at first light.

How far is it, there and back?

Adding up the distances in our Chamba to Killar guide:

StartTo the topThere and back
Dalhousieabout 165–175 kmabout 330–350 km
Chambaabout 120 kmabout 240 km
Bairagarhabout 30 kmabout 60 km

Dalhousie to Chamba is about 45–55 km, depending on the route. The 30 km between Bairagarh and the top is the rough part, and it usually takes two to three hours each way. Everything below Bairagarh is mostly paved, but it is a narrow mountain road, and you can’t drive it fast.

What does a same-day trip actually look like?

Here is a realistic day from Dalhousie, without long stops:

  • 5 am: leave Dalhousie.
  • 7 am: through Chamba.
  • 10 am: Bairagarh. Tea, and the last easy toilet stop.
  • 12:30 pm: at the top, if the road is good. The streams are already rising.
  • 3 pm: back in Bairagarh, if nothing goes wrong on the way down.
  • 8 pm or later: back in Dalhousie, the last part in the dark.

That leaves no margin for a puncture, a queue behind a stuck truck, or a stream you have to wait out. And the hardest driving, the descent from the top, falls in the early afternoon, when the stream rule says you should already be past it.

Why is the evening the problem?

Because most of what goes badly on this road happens late. In May 2026, a car carrying seven tourists left a Dalhousie hotel for Sach Pass. When it hadn’t come back by evening, the hotel called the police. It was found in a gorge on the Bairagarh–Sach Pass–Killar road, where it had gone off the road around midnight, and all eight people in it died. We don’t know why that car crashed. But the pattern is common: a long day, tired drivers, and a mountain road in the dark.

The avalanche that stranded 33 people in June 2025 was also reported at night, at about 8:30 pm. More on these in is Sach Pass dangerous?

What should you do instead?

Sleep one night at the foot of the climb. With a night in Bairagarh:

  • The afternoon before, you drive up from Dalhousie or Chamba on the paved road, in daylight, with no rush.
  • At first light, you start the climb with the streams at their lowest.
  • By late morning, you’re at the top with time to stop.
  • By early afternoon, you’re back in Bairagarh, or on your way down to Killar.

It also means a gentler night for your body than coming straight up from the plains. See altitude sickness on Sach Pass.

If you must do it in a day, how?

  • Leave Dalhousie no later than 5 am, or start from Chamba.
  • Set a turnaround time, such as noon, and turn around when it comes, wherever you are.
  • Take a driver who knows the road, in a high-clearance vehicle.
  • Check the latest official status the night before, and ask again in Bairagarh on the way up.
  • Carry warm clothes, water and food, in case you have to wait.

Quick answers

How far is Sach Pass from Dalhousie?

Roughly 165–175 km one way: about 45–55 km from Dalhousie to Chamba, depending on the route and the source, then about 120 km from Chamba to the top.

How long does it take to drive from Bairagarh to the top of Sach Pass?

Usually two to three hours for the 30 km, in either direction, depending on the vehicle and the state of the road.

Do taxi drivers in Dalhousie do Sach Pass day trips?

Some do. Ask the driver what time you'll leave the top. If the answer is after about 1 pm, you'll come down the rough section in the late afternoon and reach the paved road after dark.

What is the latest safe time to be at the top?

There's no official cut-off. Our rule is to be at the top by late morning and heading down by midday, so the streams are still low and you're below Bairagarh before dark.
