Most people cross Sach Pass in a hurry, and the light is wrong for half of it. This tour is built the other way round: the days are planned around when each place looks best, with dawn at the top, morning on the Pangi side, and late afternoon in the valleys.
You travel in an SUV with a driver who's happy to stop, cross the pass to Killar and back, and spend a full day on the cliff roads and gorges of Pangi. Bring what you like; we'll carry it.
Difficulty: By SUV with a driver; very early starts and short walks with gear at altitude.

Before you go
Road, season and permit notes last checked . For today's report, see is Sach Pass open?
Permits and documents
- No permit for Indian travellers, as of November 2026. Carry photo ID.
- Drones: India's drone rules and local restrictions apply. Check them, and any permission you need, before you fly. We can't arrange drone permissions.
- Ask before photographing people, and inside temples.
Safety and acclimatisation
- Pre-dawn at the top means about 4,414 m in the cold. Keep moving, wear everything, and come down if you feel unwell.
- Never stand at the outer edge of the cliff roads for a shot: the edges are loose.
- Watch for falling stones under the overhangs, especially after rain.
Road conditions
- Snow walls near the top are usually at their tallest just after opening (late May or June).
- Late September and early October usually bring dry roads and clear air before the first snow.
- Monsoon months (mid-July to August) bring cloud, mist and landslides: dramatic, but unreliable.
What to pack
- Camera, lenses, tripod and spare batteries (cold drains them fast)
- Lens cloths and a rain cover
- Down jacket, gloves you can work the camera in, and a hat
- Head torch
- Memory cards: there's nowhere to buy them past Chamba

Sach Pass Photography Tour: quick answers
What's the best month to photograph Sach Pass?
June if you want the snow walls, late September to early October for clear, dry light and autumn colour. July and August are cloudy and unreliable.
Can I fly a drone at Sach Pass?
Check India's drone rules and any local restrictions before you go, and get any permission you need yourself. We can't arrange it, and rules change.
Can we be at the top for sunrise?
Yes. That's day 3: you leave Bairagarh in the dark and arrive as it gets light. It's very cold, so dress for it.
Can I join alone?
Yes. Tell us, and we plan the car and rooms for one, or let you know if others are travelling on similar dates.
Is it OK for video and vlogging?
Yes. The driver stops for takes, within safety. Tell us what you're filming so we plan the light and stops.

Things that change, and what we couldn't confirm
- Snow and light conditions vary a lot from year to year. The months given are what usually works.
- Drone rules are set nationally and locally and change; we don't advise on them beyond 'check first'.
