Most people who reach Sach Pass come by car, and most of those who have a bad day there drove themselves too far, too late. This package hands the wheel to a local driver who crosses the pass every season, in a high-clearance SUV, with the days split so the hard part always falls in the morning.
You start from Pathankot, Dalhousie or Chamba, sleep in Chamba and Bairagarh on the way up, cross to Killar in Pangi, and come back the same way with a night in Bairagarh before the paved road home.
Difficulty: No effort needed from you, but long, bumpy days on an unpaved mountain road and a short time at about 4,414 m.
Highlights
- A driver who knows when to wait for a stream to drop
- Morning crossings, both ways
- Time at the top, not a rushed photo stop

- Pick-up from the station, the airport or your hotel
Who it suits
- Families and couples who don't want to drive
- First-timers to high mountain roads

Permits and documents
- No permit for Indian travellers, as of November 2026. Carry photo ID for everyone in the car.
- Your driver carries the vehicle's commercial papers. Vehicle details are noted at the Satrundi check post, as riders and travel writers report.
- Foreign nationals should check the current rules for Pangi before travelling.
Safety and acclimatisation
- You sleep at about 2,800 m in Bairagarh and spend under an hour at about 4,414 m. That's usually fine for healthy adults, but tell us about any heart or lung condition, pregnancy or very young children.
- We never cross after dark, and we turn back if the road report or the weather says so.
- The road is bumpy for hours. If anyone gets car-sick, sit them up front and carry the usual tablets.
Road conditions
- Chamba to Bairagarh is mostly paved; above Bairagarh it's unpaved, with streams running over the road.
- Traffic across the top is single lane in places, so expect waits for oncoming vehicles and buses.
- After early snow the administration can allow small 4×4s only, as in October 2026. Your driver knows what's allowed that week.
What to pack
- A warm jacket, hat and gloves, even in summer
- Sunglasses and sunscreen
- Comfortable shoes with grip for the snow at the top
- Personal medicines and motion-sickness tablets
- Snacks and water for the crossing days
- Cash: ATMs are scarce past Tissa

Sach Pass Taxi Package: quick answers
Which car do you send for Sach Pass?
A high-clearance SUV such as an Innova Crysta or Scorpio, with a local driver. A low sedan can scrape and stall in the streams above Bairagarh.
Is the Sach Pass taxi trip OK for children and older people?
Usually, yes, because no one walks far and you spend little time at the top. The road is long and bumpy, though, and the top is cold. Ask us if anyone has a heart or lung condition.
Can the taxi just take us to the top and back?
Yes: that's our two-day excursion from Chamba or Dalhousie, with a night in Bairagarh so you go up at first light. We don't plan same-day trips from Dalhousie: too long, and the drive back ends in the dark.
Can we go one way, from Chamba to Manali?
Yes. Our Chamba to Manali crossover goes over Sach Pass, through Pangi to Udaipur and Keylong, and out through the Atal Tunnel.
Is there a bus instead?
In season, HRTC runs a direct Chamba–Killar bus over the pass, leaving Chamba early in the morning. It's cheap and an adventure, but it doesn't stop at the top for you.

Things that change, and what we couldn't confirm
- The SUV model depends on what's free on your dates; we confirm it in the quote.
- Bairagarh to Pathankot (about 210 km) is our sum of the Bairagarh–Chamba and Chamba–Pathankot figures, not an official distance.
