Sach Pass (Sachche Jot) is a road pass of about 4,414 m on the Pir Panjal in Chamba district, Himachal Pradesh, linking Chamba with Pangi Valley. It's open to vehicles for only a few months a year, roughly from late May or June until mid-October, and the last 30 km to the top from Bairagarh are unpaved. This guide gives the short answer on each topic and links to the full post.

Where is Sach Pass, and why does it matter?

Sach Pass crosses the Pir Panjal, the range that separates the Chamba valleys from Pangi, at about 4,414 m. Its official name is Sachche Jot, after the goddess of the pass, and the story of how it came to be called “Sach Pass” is in why is it called Sach Pass?

For Pangi, on the far side, it’s a lifeline. When the pass is open, Killar is a long day from Chamba. When it’s shut, the valley’s road link to the district town is gone for months. For visitors it’s one of the most dramatic drives in Himachal: tarmac to Bairagarh, then 30 km of rock, snow and running water to the top, and a steeper drop into Pangi.

When is it open?

Roughly from late May or June until the first heavy snow from mid-October, but the dates move by weeks from year to year. Here’s the latest:

Latest report (17 October 2026): Small 4×4s only. At the last report, snow had shut it for two days and it reopened for small 4×4s only, with icy patches.

Source: Sach Pass road reopens after 2-day closure, The Tribune (17 October 2026) (opens in a new tab). Last checked 3 November 2026. Usually open: Late May or June until snow shuts it, from mid-October. The dates move every year. Today's status, in full.

How do you get there?

Every approach from the south goes through Chamba town. Pathankot has the nearest railway station and an airport, and Kangra airport near Dharamshala is the other option. From Manali there’s no direct road: you go round through Lahaul and Pangi and climb the pass from Killar.

The road, stop by stop

Chamba, Tissa, Bairagarh, Satrundi, the top, Bagotu and Killar: about 166 km in all. The one fact to remember is fuel. Bairagarh has the last petrol pump before the pass, and Pangi has none at all. Our road guide walks through each stage, where to sleep and what to carry: Chamba to Killar over Sach Pass, stop by stop.

Do you need a permit?

Not if you’re an Indian citizen, as of November 2026, and there’s nothing to apply for online. You will want your ID and vehicle papers for the police check post at Satrundi. What can stop you is an order from the Chamba administration: a winter closure, or a restriction to certain vehicles after snow. Documents for each kind of vehicle, rented bikes and the rules for foreign nationals: Sach Pass permit guide.

Is it safe?

It’s a serious mountain road, not a dangerous one if you respect it. The risks are known: avalanches early in the season, rockfall in the monsoon, long drops beside a narrow road, ice late in the year, and driving tired after dark. Most go away if you cross early, in good weather, with a night’s sleep in Bairagarh behind you.

Riding or driving it yourself

On a motorbike, the climb from Bairagarh tests your gravel and water skills, and the way down to Killar is harder. In a car, ground clearance matters more than four-wheel drive in a dry month, and four-wheel drive matters a lot after snow.

Where to stay

The night that matters most is the one before the climb, in Bairagarh. Chamba and Tissa have more choice lower down; Satrundi has a seasonal camp; Killar has homestays and a rest house on the far side.

How many days?

Three from Chamba to see the top and come back with a day to spare; five to cross to Killar and return; seven to explore Pangi or carry on to Manali. A same-day trip from Dalhousie is possible on paper but a bad idea in practice.

Beyond the pass: Killar and Pangi

Killar is Pangi’s main town, on the Chenab, where two roads leave: east to Lahaul and Manali, and west to Kishtwar in Jammu and Kashmir. Both are rough and remote. After Sach Pass: Killar to Lahaul or Kishtwar? compares them.

Sach Pass tour packages

If you’d rather we planned it, our Sach Pass tour packages are run from Bairagarh: a motorcycle expedition, a taxi trip, a self-drive 4×4, a Pangi Valley circuit, a two-day excursion from Dalhousie or Chamba, camping and stargazing near Satrundi, a photography tour and the crossing to Manali. Each crosses in the morning, with a night at the foot of the climb before it, and is quoted on WhatsApp.
