Sach Pass has opened to light vehicles anywhere between 11 May (2026) and 3 July (2023) in recent years, and it shuts for vehicles from mid-October, when the first heavy snow comes. The formal winter closure order can follow weeks later. Every date below comes from a news report of the order or the snow clearance, and the status box updates whenever a new report is added.

What does the latest report say?
Latest report (17 October 2026): Small 4×4s only. At the last report, snow had shut it for two days and it reopened for small 4×4s only, with icy patches.
Source: Sach Pass road reopens after 2-day closure, The Tribune (17 October 2026) (opens in a new tab). Last checked 3 November 2026. Usually open: Late May or June until snow shuts it, from mid-October. The dates move every year. Today's status, in full.
The box above is taken straight from our Road status page, which carries the full report. If you’re reading this between November and May, the answer is almost certainly that the road over the top is shut and only the Chamba side up to Bairagarh is driven.
Opening and closing dates since 2023
The quick version, one row per year:
| Year | First light vehicles through | Traffic stopped by snow | Winter closure order |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 3 July | No report found | No report found |
| 2024 | 8 June | No report found | 30 November |
| 2025 | About 26 May | 6–7 October | No report found |
| 2026 | 11 May | 15–17 October, then small 4×4s only | Not yet reported |
So the gap between the earliest and latest opening in four years is almost eight weeks. In 2024, the one year with both an opening and a closing order on record, the road was legally open for vehicles for a little under six months, from 8 June to 30 November.

When will it open next year?
Nobody knows until the PWD’s snow-clearing crews get through, and the date depends on how much snow fell over the winter and how fast it melts. What the record does tell you:
- The earliest recent opening was 11 May. Engineers quoted by The Tribune in 2026 called that almost a month early.
- The latest was 3 July, in 2023.
- Light vehicles go first. Cars and motorbikes get through weeks before buses and trucks, which wait for the road to be certified for heavy vehicles.
If your dates are fixed, the second half of June is the earliest we’d plan a crossing, and September is the safest bet. Keep travel and rooms flexible until the opening is reported.

When does it close?
There are two different “closings”, and it helps to keep them apart:
- Snow stops the traffic. The first heavy fall at the top, usually from mid-October, makes the road impassable for days. In 2025 that happened on 6–7 October; in 2026 on 15 October. Sometimes the road reopens afterwards, as it did on 17 October 2026, for small 4×4s only.
- The order. The Deputy Commissioner in Chamba then formally closes the road for the winter under the Motor Vehicles Act. In 2024 that order came on 30 November, weeks after the first snow.
In practice, plan as if the season ends on 15 October. A crossing after that is a gamble on the weather, and an early snowfall can leave you on the wrong side of the pass.
Why the dates move so much
Sach Pass sits at about 4,414 m on the Pir Panjal, and the road over the top is cut through snow every spring. A heavy winter, a late spring or avalanches on the cleared road all push the opening back. In 2025 an avalanche at night on 3 June stranded 33 people a week after the road opened, so even “open” early in the season can mean open with interruptions.
Who decides, and how to check before you set off, is covered in who opens and closes Sach Pass. For what each month is like once the road is open, read our month-by-month guide.

Quick answers
When will Sach Pass open in 2027?
Nobody can say until the snow is cleared. In the last four years the first light vehicles got through between 11 May and 3 July. Don't book anything you can't move before the opening is reported, and plan your crossing for mid-June or later if your dates are fixed.
When does Sach Pass close for the winter?
Traffic usually stops with the first heavy snow from mid-October, and the pass is treated as closed to vehicles from then. The Deputy Commissioner’s formal closure order can come later: in 2024 it was issued on 30 November.
Is Sach Pass open right now?
See the latest report at the top of this post, or the full status page. Both show the date and source of the most recent news report or official order.
Does the bus run as soon as the pass opens?
No. Light vehicles go first. Buses and trucks wait until the PWD certifies the road for heavy vehicles, which in 2026 was late June, about six weeks after the first cars.
Can I still cross in October?
In the first half of the month, often yes, if the snow holds off. After mid-October one snowfall can shut it for days, as on 15 October 2026, after which only small 4×4s were let through.
