Three days is the least we'd plan for Sach Pass from Chamba: one day up to Bairagarh, one to the top and back, one spare. Five days lets you cross to Killar in Pangi and return. Seven days covers Pangi's side valleys, or a one-way crossing to Manali through Lahaul. Every plan sleeps in Bairagarh before the climb and crosses in the morning. Add two days if you're starting from Delhi.

Before you choose: three rules for every plan
Whichever plan you pick, it follows the same three rules:
- Sleep in Bairagarh before you climb. It’s the last village and the last fuel, about 30 km below the top.
- Cross in the morning. Meltwater streams on both sides of the pass rise through the day. Leave at first light and be over by late morning.
- Keep a day in hand. Snow, landslides and high water close the road without warning.
Every plan starts and ends in Chamba. To get there from Pathankot, Kangra or Delhi, see how to reach Sach Pass.
3 days: the top of the pass and back
For a first look at Sach Pass without crossing into Pangi.
| Day | Route | About | Sleep |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Chamba → Tissa → Bairagarh | 90 km, 4–5 hours | Bairagarh |
| 2 | Bairagarh → Sach Pass → Bairagarh | 60 km, 5–6 hours with time at the top | Bairagarh |
| 3 | Bairagarh → Chamba (or the spare day) | 90 km, 3–4 hours | Chamba, or on to Dalhousie |
Day 1. Up the Churah valley, through Tissa, on a narrow paved road. Arrive in daylight, fill the tank and turn in early.
Day 2. Leave at dawn. The 30 km climb takes two to three hours through rock and water; the snow walls near Satrundi are tallest in June. Spend time at the top, then come down before the streams peak. The afternoon is free in Bairagarh.
Day 3. Down to Chamba. If day 2 was lost to weather, use this day for the top instead and drive down in the afternoon.
Staying in Dalhousie? The same plan works with a longer first and last day, and is far safer than doing it all in one. Our day-trip post explains why.

5 days: over the pass to Killar and back
For crossing into Pangi and seeing both sides of the pass.
| Day | Route | About | Sleep |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Chamba → Bairagarh | 90 km, 4–5 hours | Bairagarh |
| 2 | Bairagarh → Sach Pass → Killar | 76 km, 6–8 hours | Killar |
| 3 | Around Killar (or the spare day) | 0–40 km | Killar |
| 4 | Killar → Sach Pass → Bairagarh | 76 km, 6–8 hours | Bairagarh |
| 5 | Bairagarh → Chamba | 90 km, 3–4 hours | Chamba |
Day 2 is the big one: up to the top early, then down the steeper, looser Pangi side through Bagotu to Killar, Pangi’s main town.
Day 3 is your margin. If day 2 went to plan, cross the Chenab to the old Chamunda temple at Mindhal, whose copper-plate grant dates from 1641, or drive a little way along the river road where it’s cut under overhanging rock.
Day 4 is the climb from the Pangi side. Pangi has no petrol pump, so make sure on day 1 that your tank (and a spare can, if you have one) will cover about 150–190 km of slow driving, depending on how far you go on day 3.
7 days, option A: Pangi’s side valleys
For travellers who want the valley, not just the pass.
| Day | Route | About | Sleep |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Chamba → Bairagarh | 90 km | Bairagarh |
| 2 | Bairagarh → Sach Pass → Killar | 76 km | Killar |
| 3 | Killar → Sural Bhatori and back | Roughly 45 km in all | Killar |
| 4 | Killar → Mindhal → Hudan Bhatori and back | Roughly 40–50 km in all | Killar |
| 5 | Killar → along the Chenab towards Purthi and back | Roughly 40–50 km in all | Killar |
| 6 | Killar → Sach Pass → Bairagarh | 76 km | Bairagarh |
| 7 | Bairagarh → Chamba | 90 km | Chamba |
The side valleys are short on the map but slow on the ground: single-lane roads, partly unpaved, cut into the cliffs. Sural Bhatori, roughly 22 km from Killar, is one of Pangi’s most remote villages. Hudan Bhatori is closer, a cluster of villages up a side stream. Days 3 to 5 can be shuffled to suit the weather.

7 days, option B: one way to Manali
For a journey across the ranges, Chamba to Manali.
| Day | Route | About | Sleep |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive in Chamba | — | Chamba |
| 2 | Chamba → Bairagarh | 90 km | Bairagarh |
| 3 | Bairagarh → Sach Pass → Killar | 76 km | Killar |
| 4 | Killar → Udaipur | About 78 km, 3–5 hours | Udaipur |
| 5 | Udaipur → Trilokinath → Tandi → Keylong | About 55–65 km | Keylong |
| 6 | Keylong → Atal Tunnel → Manali | About 71 km, 2½–3 hours | Manali |
| 7 | Spare day | — | Wherever the road held you up |
From Killar the road follows the Chenab east through a narrow, rocky gorge into Lahaul. It’s dusty and exposed, and rockfall has closed it (and killed travellers) in recent seasons, so check it the evening before. At Tandi you reach the first petrol pump since Bairagarh. From Keylong it’s a paved run through the Atal Tunnel to Manali.
The route works just as well from Manali to Chamba. Then you sleep in Killar before the Sach Pass climb, and cross from the Pangi side in the morning.

Starting further away
- From Pathankot or Kangra: add an arrival day to Chamba (about 120 km from Pathankot, 150 km from Kangra) and a departure day back.
- From Delhi or Chandigarh: add a day to reach Pathankot or Dalhousie, and the same on the way home.
- From Dharamshala: Chamba is a half-day’s drive over the Jot road, so you can arrive on day 1 and keep the plans above.
Distances for every leg are in our Sach Pass distance chart, and the months that work best are in the month-by-month guide.

Quick answers
How many days do you need for Sach Pass?
At least three from Chamba to see the top and come back safely, five to cross to Killar and return, and seven to explore Pangi or go on to Manali. Add travel days to and from Chamba.
How many days for Sach Pass from Delhi?
Add a day each way to any plan here: Delhi to Pathankot or Dalhousie on the first day, Chamba the next morning. So five days is the minimum for the top and back, seven to cross to Killar.
Why keep a spare day?
Because snow, a high stream or a landslide can close the road for a day or more with no warning. A spare day turns that into a rest day instead of a missed train.
Where should I sleep before crossing Sach Pass?
In Bairagarh, the last village before the climb and the last fuel. Starting there at first light puts you over the top before the streams rise.
Can I do Sach Pass one way?
Yes: Chamba to Manali over Sach Pass and through Pangi and Lahaul, or the other way round. It takes about six days with sensible stages.
